For an assignment in middle school, we were tasked with coming up with a brand new product that we would "sell" to the class. My best friend, Hayley, and I set out to create what we considered the biggest contribution to the food industry since sliced bread. We invented the "sporkife": a spoon, fork, and knife all in one utensil. What we did was attach a spork to a knife, as seen in the picture. We realize this was an awful invention after trying to use it. It was painful to use since the knife was where your hand was supposed to go and it was also impractical because typically, you need to use a knife and fork together to cut your food. However, we did not present these flaws to the class and only talked about all the benefits it had, and the class ended up loving the idea.
Why ENT3003?
I enrolled in ENT3003 honestly because I love watching the show Shark Tank. I also am interested in opening my own small business one day. I hope to be able to see a vision for my future and be confident in my ability to start a business of my own. I'm not sure what kind of business I would like to own, so I hope this class gives me some ideas on what I could do with my skills.
Your entrepreneurship skills started young! Although your idea is impractical, it still was a great idea. Having a utensil like this in the future could help cut down the amount of plastic forks, knifes, and spoons disposed of, especially because you could make it out of wood or reusable plastic.

ReplyDeleteI am a food and resource economics major, so I appreciate the middle school you trying to help out the food industry. Not every idea is going to work but it never hurts to try. Everyone who starts a new business took a risk. Also, big fan of shark tank myself. Mark Cuban is someone I look up to.

ReplyDeleteI find this invention so funny for some reason. Before you mentioned it was a terrible Idea, i stated outloud, "this is a terrible idea". However it has the potential to be so great. If you somehow had a cap or a cover for the knife part that one could pop off when using the knife end this may work. Except then you have to hold the spork part.. So maybe not so much. Not telling your audience the flaws though is how you make a product sell! Clever.
Hey Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI think it’s super cool that you have already made a business idea, and yes, I can imagine that the spork knife hurt a little. In high school I made a cupcake company with some friends (it failed) where the cupcakes were in little pots and decorated as flowers.
Shark tank seems to be a common reason people were drawn to this class, including myself. I hope you enjoy this class as much as I hope to.
